information:
When I first came across the name Gloria Morti, I immediately thought this might be the solo debut from a certain psychotic goth chick I fooled around with years ago who I think went by a similar name (I can never remember such details), but much to my relief this comes from a six-piece from Finland. If one were to ask me about Finnish-bred metal a few months ago, the best example I would have for them would be Children Of Bodom. Gloria Morti are one of the many bands I’ve recently discovered that have made me realize just how much the Scandinavian scene really has to offer. While rooted in thrash/speed metal, Gloria would best be described as Gothic-flavored Blackened Death. Lifestream Corrosion is one of those discs that can be both extreme and atmospheric at once. As brutal as they are musical, Gloria Morti has latched on to a sound popularized by bands like Cradle Of Filth and Dimmu Borgir, and has injected a fresh dose of demonic venom and relit the hellfires that were slowly being smothered by the legions of clones we’ve been inundated with. At first glance, Gloria may come across as one of these clones of the bands I mentioned previously, but the deeper I got into the record, the more I began to think that the band is taking a good idea and running in their own direction with it. With vocals ranging from those of a shrieking demon to guttural growls to that good old fashion death roar, vocalist Psycho hits every end of the spectrum and does it with the conviction to live up to his name. The down-tuned ferocity of the guitars remind me of a cool hybrid of Cannibal Corpse and Emperor, chops o’ plenty here kids. Backed up by stellar drumming and beautifully textured by bits of hauntingly played keyboards. Factor in the amazing production that gives every last note its breathing space and you can’t miss. I’m going to stop short of calling Lifestream Corrosion brilliant, but it doesn’t fall too short from the realm of greatness.

You just know when a band doesn’t know what they play. Instead of aiming for a better result as a Thrash band, a Death or a Black metal band, Gloria Morti merges everything into their magic pot and the result is… …actually pretty good.
I wonder what would’ve happened if they focused more on the Black Metal aspect of the band. Well, why talk about something that could’ve been instead what in reality is. Their songs are mainly rapid, the production is pretty clear and their music has some variation to it. In a way it feels like the band desires to do more than it is capable of. In the 7th track, “The Orphanage” the keyboards are cheesy and would better have been left out. It’s like they include it just for the sake of it. But in the second song, “Ephemeral Lifespan” Gloria Morti does something right when they change direction after 1.11 minutes. The change in the riff is cool and stands on its own. However, they include some keyboards at the same time and it lifts the song to new heights. A moment like this is worth living for.
As a whole I think Gloria Morti is onto something, even if the band doesn’t let loose the talent in its full capacity. I think they could vary their music even more, leave some keyboards behind and concentrate on song-writing. As it is now, it feels like the band isn’t self-confident enough.
A final aspect is the vocals done by Psycho. Ironically they’re too varied. It’s like “Lifestream Corrosion” isn’t enough varied, while Psycho’s singing is too varied in its extremity. He sings like Maniac of Mayhem, Dani of Cradle Of Filth and Phil Anselmo of Pantera in every song. Somehow the vocals have to be more focused and a tad one-dimensional, without being monotonous. Gloria Morti, or the labels, defines the music as extreme metal. That’s sure a fitting categorisation up to 80%, but they have to leave out some of the keys to move to a higher level of extremity.
